This week will mark the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. On Saturday, March 25, 1911 146 lives were lost when the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City's Washington Square broke out in flames. The workers, mostly women and girls, were trapped in the top floors of a building with no sprinklers, locked doors and only one fire escape.
Fire ladders could not reach the top three floors of the ten story building and the fire escape collapsed under the weight of those trying to flee the fire. By standers watched women leap out windows to their death as they tried to get away.
The fire led to a two year investigation of working conditions and factory safety. This investigation led to child labor laws, fire safety codes, and New York Worker's Compensation.
