3 Actions Which Jeopardize Workers' Compensation Benefits

Employees injured on the job may be eligible for workers' compensation benefits. As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of workers' compensation, it is important for employees to remember these benefits were not always available. To ensure workers continue to have access to compensation for medical expenses and lost wages, we must all try to protect the workers' compensation system. This includes fraud prevention. If you have been injured on the job, you must make sure you avoid jeopardizing the benefits received by you and other injured workers. Consider these tips regarding what NOT to do while collecting workers' compensation or disability benefits.

Handle Complicated Claims On Your Own

In some cases, a workers' compensation claim is very cut and dry with no need for representation. In many more cases, there are issues with arise and nuances within the law which could affect your right to receive benefits. Injured workers are encouraged to speak with an experienced workers' compensation attorney to ensure their rights are protected.

Make False Claims

If you were injured at work and as a result require medical treatments or time off the job, then you are within your rights to do so while receiving compensation. What you are not permitted to do is lie about an injury, claim medical care when no care was received or continue to collect benefits after you are physically able to return to work. Fraudulent claims and other activity is a major problem in the workers' compensation system; a problem that many people will have to deal with if not corrected soon.

Work A Side Job

The benefits you receive as a result of being injured on the job are compensation due to the fact you cannot work. When the time comes when you can work...do not fool yourself into thinking you can do both. Collecting benefits while working a side-job is not permitted and will cause problems for you in the long run.
