A Little More Help and Hope for Disabled Workers

Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income are programs designed to assist those who become disabled and unable to work receive benefits to help them survive. An especially important consideration in this day and age.

Amazingly, those with some of the most severe disabilities such as terminal illnesses, cancers and other disease often have to endure the gruelling process of Social Security (In New York for instance, we have waited as long as two years for a hearing!)

However, SSA has now expanded its Fast-Track Disability Process where it expects to incrase the resolution of cases in the Quick Disability Determination (QDD) program and Compassionate Allowances process. In fact, SSA notes that it is now fast-tracking about 4 percent of all disability cases, up from 2.7 percent last year -- there is hope for those in need.

"In practical terms, this means that this year 100,000 to 125,000 disabled Americans -- those with the most severe disabilities -- will be approved for benefits in about 10 days instead of waiting the three to four months it typically takes for an initial decision," Commissioner Astrue said.  "These initiatives are truly a lifeline for those who need it most."
