Am I Entitled to Money Under the Zadroga Act?

The New York City Department of Health estimates that approximately 70,000 people have been affected from exposure to chemicals and toxins found in the air at Ground Zero. Toxins and chemicals fround in the area include lead, asbestos, mercury and a number of other known carcinogens.

The Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act passed on December 22, 2010 - and funds the previously closed Victim Compensation Fund with another $2.5 billion. The money in the Victim Compensation Fund is provided to anyone suffering health problems as a result of exposure to Ground Zero, not just for public employees and first responders to the scene. Funds may include lost wages and disability, as well as compensation for pain and suffering experienced as a result of the 9/11 attacks.

Who is Covered By the Zadroga Act?

You do not have to be a police officer, firefighter, EMT or other first responder on the scene to receive benefits of Zadroga Act. Employees working near Ground Zero, including construction workers, clergy and local store owners, as well as residents, have also reported becoming sick due to long-term exposure of the toxins in the area.

Illnesses and injuries related to the air quality of the area include:

  • cancer
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • lung disease
  • asthma
  • chronic cough
  • silicosis

If you suffered one of the above injuries, or other illnesses as result of your exposure to Ground Zero, you may be entitled to compensation under the Zadroga Act. A New York Zadroga Act Attorney can help you determine if you are owed compensation - even if you've already received compensation from your insurance company, a lawsuit, or workers' compensation.
