Applying for disability benefits? You need a doctor on your side

If you are applying for Social Security disability benefits, you need to make sure that you and your doctor are on the same page.  This is because the New York state disability determination process will gather information from your doctor about your medical condition.

 

This information will be used to determine if you are in fact disabled to the point that you are unable to work.  It is important that the information on your application and the information your doctor provides to the disability determination specialists is the same.

 

Questions your doctor will be asked:

• What medical condition(s) do you suffer from?
• When did your medical condition start?
• What have medical tests revealed about your condition?
• What medical treatments have you received for your condition?
• How does your medical condition affect your ability to work and perform other activities?

 

The doctors and disability specialists at the state agency will use the information they gather to decide if you are too disabled to work, thereby qualifying you for disability benefits.  You can give yourself a leg up in this process by filling out your disability application completely and clearly, and by making sure that your doctor agrees with the information you put on the form.
