Are There Red Flags You Ignore at Work?

With the influx of violent crimes at the workplace, it's curious to know just how observant you are at your job. For those who do not work in places that are perceived to be more prone to workplace violence, there may be many red flags being raised that are just not being observed especially by you.

Consider how observant you are at your job. Do you regularly interact with co-workers that may be throwing off signals which seem out of character? Are there customers of particular concern? Regardless who the signals are coming from, the real question lies in your hands - that is, what are you doing about it?

A good majority of people are afraid to report peculiar activities around the office. There is fear of being considered a snitch by coworkers or being perceived as extreme by management. It can be a case of being stuck between a rock and a hard place and for many workers, they succumb to the pressures of having to remain quiet. Whether those who act out rely on others not telling is hard to say but when it comes to violence in the workplace today, it can be said that you have a responsibility to report what you know as soon as you observe suspicious activities.

The reality of today is that it is rarely worth it to take of risk of staying silent. Bullying in the workplace is an act of violence on some level that often goes on because of people's failure to report. Simple bullying at work can easily lead to more violent acts and it can happen at any time. Being observant and responsible in reporting what you see is key to preventing additional, more violent acts.

No one wants to be stuck with the duty of ‘ratting' out a co-worker but it's likely still that no one wants to bear the weight of responsibility should something happen. If you suddenly notice something out of the ordinary concerning your co-workers or even customers, be sure to write down the facts as they happen and speak immediately with a supervisor. It's a tough call to be involved but imagine what could happen if you ignored the big red flag being raised.
