Are you caught in the Social Security Disability claim recession backlog?

The sour economy is bad enough for many Americans, but for those unable to work because of illness or injury, times are especially tough.

If you have recently suffered from an illness or injury that leaves you unable to work, you may have already applied for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits.  Unfortunately, you are part of a recent trend that shows no signs of slowing.  What can you do?

Since two-thirds of initial SSD claims are rejected, your best bet is to make sure your initial application is as complete as possible.  If you are rejected you can always appeal, but that will add time to your wait – time you may not have.

Some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Make sure your illness or disability actually makes you eligible for SSD benefits.   You can find this information on the SSD website, or you can ask an attorney for help.
  2. Make it clear in your paperwork that you have a covered disability or illness.  Fill out all the required paperwork, and make sure that your doctor provides you with the necessary documentation – and that your doctor’s description of your condition matches the SSD description of what is covered.  The SSD won’t just take your word that you have a covered disability!
  3. Expedite your claim if you can.  Certain disabilities and illnesses – or certain people like military folks – can speed up their claim.  Read more about expedited claims in our law library article “Can I Fast-Track my Social Security Disability Application?” and “How ‘Wounded Warriors’ can get expedited Social Security Disability help”.
