Domestic Help Vulnerable to High Medical Bills Resulting from Workplace Accidents

Despite the laws on the books requiring employers of domestic help to pay taxes as well as workers compensation insurance premiums, there are plenty of employers who do not comply. This happens in New York and other states across the nation. In an effort to reduce the cost of hiring domestic help, some employers are taking a big risk that could end up costing them thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately when employers decide they don't have to abide by the laws, everyone suffers. This is true for the employee who does not have the benefits to which they are entitled and the entire system as a whole. Even the employer who thinks they are getting a good deal will soon discover this is not the case. If an employee is injured on the job and files a workers compensation claim, the employer could face steep penalties and fines for not having workers compensation insurance.

When it comes to accidents at the work place, employees working for individuals who do not provide required benefits and protection are especially vulnerable. It stands to reason that an employer who does not respect one law, may not respect other laws including those governing workplace safety. Individuals who have been hurt on the job and are afraid to come forward due to the legality of their working situation are encouraged to do so. If employers are permitted to hire and utilize the services of domestic help, they must also be willing to provide the same level of protection and safety which workers of a larger company are entitled. Don't allow your rights to be violated; contact an experienced workers compensation attorney today to discuss your case.
