Winter time often brings hazards workers only have to deal with a few months out of the year. Because of this, many people often forget how they've survived the previous winters and tend to make mistakes that jeopardize their winter safety. You may only think of the annoyances of winter commutes when the weatherman predicts ice and snow and not much about personal safety.
There are all kinds of things that can go wrong during the winter commute to or from work. Slip and falls on icy sidewalks can lead to broken body parts, putting you out of work commission for weeks at a time or at least impeding on your daily routines. It's important to prepare for and prevent falls by personally caring for your own property by shoveling or salting walkways and stairs. You certainly want to avoid your own legal problems and insurance liabilities if someone should get injured on your property. Your employer should also be taking care of their property in the same way. If not, don't hesitate to report problems to management. Wear appropriate footwear and stash work shoes in a carry bag or at the office. Stupidity, such as heels in an icy storm, is often the cause of injured body parts.
Another concern of winter is the people who are obligated to work on the road because of their job duties. There are all kinds of drivers on the road who get paid for the drive and have no choice but to be out there in potentially unsafe conditions. Winter weather-related accidents can not only be expensive for an employer, they can cost the employee a lot of money in lost income and medical treatments. Unfortunately, it can also cost working drivers their life in some cases.
Exercise common sense and caution during the winter months. You owe it to yourself to stay safe and avoid being a risk to others just because you're tired of the backed up traffic during your commute or because pedestrians in front of you are walking too slow on a slippery sidewalk. Impatience often results in accidents so practice more patience. Also practice planning an earlier start to your day to give yourself time to get to work if you are required to report in. If you have the option for staying home, at least until the roads clear, take that option to help stay safe.
Remember that in most cases winter's bad behavior will only last a few months. Spring is only a short time away and soon the snow and ice will be another memory. In the meantime, you should exercise a cautious attitude and do the best you can to get to work on time. Jeopardizing your health and safety or the lives of others is certainly not worth the risk.
