Employers Who Play With Fire Get Burned

The US Department of Labor released some frightening statistics recently that showed death by workplace fires cases have jumped considerably in the last few years. With more stringent guidelines by OSHA, it seems natural that employers would focus on basic health and safety standards and actually reduce the amount of deaths occurring from at work fires.

Sadly, fire victims suffering burns have a long road ahead of them. While they can recover benefits from workers compensation, the process of recovery can be excruciating. Not only do the victims suffer the after-effects of a fire injury, their entire family does as well. It can be an emotionally draining experience, especially if the burn injuries result in the death of a loved one.

Surviving burn victims typically must undergo painful surgeries, have multiple skin grafts, and will require physical therapy to resume some functionality. Mental health counseling may also play a role in a patient's recovery as well as in helping a family deal with the trauma the fire has caused.

Fires in the workplace are certainly on the list of the top fatal occupational injuries. Since fires can spring up virtually anywhere, employees in all industries need to be aware of the risks of fire in their work environment. They must all be sure to get the fire safety training they need in the event something does happen on the job. Those who work with fire hazards should be equipped with the right personal protective equipment and be skilled in their job duties to prevent fires from occurring.
