Falls and Violence Lead Increased Fatality Records to New York Workers

In 2010, the number of workplace fatalities grew from 63 to 69. While this may only appear to be a slight increase, the news for New York workers is not good. Over the last several decades, workplace fatalities were on the decline. Now the statistics show more people are dying on the job throughout the state.

One of the prevalent reasons workplace deaths are on the rise is due to employee violence. Experts believe the unstable economy is to blame for increased worker violence resulting in 15 workers being victims of homicide in 2010.

Falls on the job are the other big reason for worker deaths which totaled 13 for 2010. Six of the falls occurred on job sites in the construction injuries. This number has doubled from the previous year. In the case of falls on the job site, experts believe they are the result of a decreased workforce due to job cuts as the economy remains week. Workers that have maintained their jobs do so at greater risks and with more responsibilities. Due to the heavy workload, more injuries and fatalities on job sites are being reported rather than less.

Both situations do relate to stress on the job, especially with so many facing financial problems and finding it hard to make ends meet even with full time work. They are taking their frustrations out at work or are not as attentive about workplace safety because so many other things are on their mind.

If you have been the victim of workplace violence or have suffered an injury due to the carelessness of co-workers, you need to protect your rights as an injured worker and seek the advice of an experienced attorney.
