Fast tracking heart disease or organ transplant disability claims?

If you or someone you love suffers from cardiovascular disease or is waiting for an organ transplant, the Social Security disability program is looking for ways to get you the benefits you need as fast as possible.

 

The Commissioner of the Social Security Administration recently held hearings on compassionate allowances for heart disease patients and organ transplant patients.  The hearings involved the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institutes of Health, cardiovascular disease experts, and multiple organ transplant experts.  The goal was to consider implementing the Compassionate Allowance program for adults and children suffering from cardiovascular disease and facing organ transplantation.

 

The Compassionate Allowance and Quick Disability Determination process was set up in 2008 to get people facing devastating disabilities the benefits money they desperately need as fast as possible.  The SSA maintains a list of diseases and conditions that are covered by the Compassionate Allowance program, and individuals suffering from a condition on the list may apply for expedited benefits approval.

 

As of right now 88 diseases and conditions are part of the compassionate allowance program.  Cardiovascular disease may be added to the list, as it is the leading cause of death for adults in the United States.  Organ transplants may be added because over 95 thousand people are currently waiting for an organ transplant, and 4 thousand more are added to the waiting list each month.
