Is Your Time Off Jeopardizing Your Job?

In this economy, people are paying more attention to hanging on to their jobs due to the fact jobs are hard to come by. But there will always be the occasional call off from work for a variety of reasons that range from acceptable to inexcusable. Employers will handle time off from work in various ways. Some have unbendable rules about absence while others are more willing to work with employees on a personal basis.

Ideally, you never want to miss work without ensuring you are not breaking any of the regulations. Your missed time not only translates to reduced pay if you are non-salaried, you may also be jeopardizing your position with the company. Instead of random days off, get into the habit of scheduling days off when you need a break.

For those missing work for legitimate reasons such as illness or injury, discuss your issues with HR or your supervisor and let them know where you stand if you have to take multiple days off. A notification from your doctor will likely be required. Most employers don't want you to come to work sick or injured as you may be a bigger liability if you get others sick or you get more injured while performing your job tasks.

Taking your attendance at work seriously is a big part of being a good employee. You stand to hurt your prospects at your job if you call off too frequently without legitimate excuses. Make sure you stay on task with your employer and follow the handbook guidelines for the attendance policy before you make up your next day off excuse.

If you are missing work due to injuries sustained on the job, your time off from work may be extended. Contact our office to discuss a possible worker's compensation claim by calling toll free at (866) 205-2415 or use our confidential online form.
