NY Cardiovascular Disability and Heart Attacks: Could You Save a Life?

Do you know what to do if a friend or family member is having a heart attack?

The heat and activity of summer can put extra strain on the heart, especially while you're traveling long distances for vacation or sitting outdoors in the heat at a friend's backyard barbecue. If you or a loved one is having a heart attack, everything depends on acting quickly and every minute counts.

Warning Signs of a Heart Attack
Chest pain or discomfort is a big sign, but many heart attack victims don't mention it, have atypical symptoms, or think that it's "no big deal." In this case, he or she may go into cardiac arrest without warning and:

• Suddenly become unresponsive to voice or touch
• Stop breathing 
• Stop moving or showing signs of circulation

 

What Can I Do?

• You should CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY if you even suspect a heart attack. Don't wait! 
• Familiarize yourself with the signs of a heart attack now, so you can act quickly when it matters. 
• Start CPR immediately. If you don't know how, consider taking classes at your local Red Cross.
• Do not try to transport the person to the hospital yourself unless there is no other option. The paramedics are specially trained and the ambulance has the equipment necessary to revive a patient whose heart has stopped.
