PTSD and The Zadroga Act: Help Available For 9-11 First Responders & Workers

The events of September 11, 2001 affected all of us profoundly, but those who were at Ground Zero experienced horrors the rest of us can’t imagine. A recent survey found that almost 96% of 9-11 survivors and rescue workers have at least one symptom of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

PTSD occurs when the body's normal psychological defenses against stress are overwhelmed.  It is common in survivors of war, crime and car accidents.  Symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Physical stress symptoms
  • Diminished interest in normal activities
  • Withdrawal
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Outbursts of anger
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Increased vigilance
  • Exaggerated startle response

Other emotional and mental health issues that are common among WTC victims include: depression, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia and substance abuse.

The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act offers medical benefits and monetary compensation to 9-11 first responders and clean up workers whose health and well-being have been affected by the World Trade Center attacks.  The compensation isn’t automatic.  You must petition and make a case for your claim, but a New York Zadroga Act lawyer can help.

The New York City Zadroga Act attorneys at Markhoff & Mittman are honored to provide our services to the brave men and women who helped us that day.  If you are a 9-11 clean up worker or first responder and are experiencing medical or psychological effects, contact Markhoff & Mittman at 866-205-2415 to find out how you can benefit from the Zadroga Act.

Good article thanks, PTSD is certainly an issue for all emergency workers. If you think you may be suffering from PTSD you should learn more about Its causes and symptoms. You are better able to tackle or cope with a problem with more understanding.
