Accidents at Work: Caution Unsafe Working Conditions Ahead

If only all accidents at work could be prevented with this simple warning. In reality, slip and fall accidents account for almost one third of entire workplace accidents. The majority of these accidents could be prevented if proper safety procedures were followed. This includes preventing dangerous work conditions in the first place, quickly fixing dangerous conditions or at minimum providing adequate warning to workers in the area. A slip and fall accident can result in head injuries, back injuries and broken bones. Here we look at the common causes of slip and fall accidents and what to do if you have been injured as a result of an accident at work.

The following have been identified by OSHA as common causes of slip and fall accidents in the workplace:

  • weather hazards (parking lot and sidewalk areas)

  • wet or oily surfaces

  • mats or rugs that are not anchored

  • uneven traction on flooring or other walking surfaces

  • poor lighting

  • clutter

  • uneven carpet

  • loose cables (uncovered)

  • obstructed views

It is important to identify and take appropriate action to address these and other hazardous conditions when spotted. Employers who are aware of such conditions and make no moves to correct the problem or protect their employees from danger are violating the law. It is imperative that all work areas are free from clutter with clear views and all flooring surfaces are in good condition and able to provide necessary traction to prevent slipping or tripping.

Employees who have suffered an injury as a result of a workplace accident should determine if they are eligible for workers compensation to cover medical costs. To better understand if this is within your rights, contact an attorney experienced with accidents at work and workers compensation laws.
