Do You Have To Pay Taxes On Your Social Security Disability Benefits?

Claimants often wonder if they have to pay taxes on Social Security Disability benefits. As a general disclaimer, it's always good to consult with an accountant before filing a tax return if you are receiving social security disability benefits. But in short, here are the general rules for paying taxes on your benefits:

  1. If you file an "individual" tax return and your income is more than $25,000, you have to pay taxes.
  2. If you file a "joint" return, you might have to pay taxes if you and your spouse have a combined income that is more than $32,000.
  3. If you are married and you file separate returns, you will likely pay taxes on your disability benefits.
