Burnt By Your Job: On The Job Burn Injuries Serious Business

Employees working with hot liquids or flammable chemicals often suffer serious, even life-threatening injuries. In many cases, the burn injuries are preventable if the employer has taken full precaution for the health and safety of their workers.

About 5% of burn cases involving the workplace result in death and many more will result in hospitalization. There are many reasons burns are common workplace injuries including:

  • Scalding incidents from hot equipment
  • Skin contact with toxic chemicals, hot materials, liquids
  • Welding injuries
  • Respiratory burns from chemicals
  • Fires
  • Explosions
  • Electrical burns

There are many occupations that require working around environments where burn risks are common. Construction workers, electricians, food service employees, metal shops, laboratories, chemical plants, and refineries are just some of the common environments where burn risks are possible on a day to day basis. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set the following standards to prevent burn injuries and fatalities while on the job. These standards include:

  • Employers must provide fire exits that are clearly marked and provide employees with training and education on where exits are located and the emergency plan in event of a fire. A workplace must have a minimum of two fire escape routes for emergencies that are not located in close proximity to each other.
  • Fire extinguishers must be accessible to employees if they are required to attend to small fires. Training in fire fighting and use of the extinguishers must be provided by employers and employees must also be trained in alerting the workplace to fire emergencies.
  • Fire doors must not be locked or have access blocked when employees are on the premises. Exits must be clearly marked and exit routes must be clear at all times.
  • Burn injuries need immediate medical attention and likely much follow up care. Medical costs can be significant following a burn incident.
