Are New York Workers at Risk of Going Deaf in a Loud Workplace?

Good hearing is something that most of us take for granted, but for many New York workers good hearing is something they don’t have any longer because of their job. Workplace noise can lead to permanent hearing loss in employees, a loss that can make working difficult or impossible.

Hearing loss is most common in workers who do construction, manufacturing or industrial work involving loud, continuous noise. Men and women who work with heavy machinery, large vehicles or other loud equipment are most likely to be affected.

Most employers will require ear protection, but if the protection is not adequate – or if no protection is provided – injury can result. In addition, recent studies have discovered that in some industries, the combination of noise and fumes actually increases a worker’s chances of suffering from hearing problems.

Noise-related hearing loss is a widespread issue for U.S. workers

The statistics are sobering. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about 30 million workers experience hazardous noise conditions at work, and nine million more may lose their hearing thanks to metals or solvents. Hearing loss is widely reported by workers as an occupational disease.

New York workers at risk of hearing loss

Any worker can be affected by hearing loss, but some types of workers are more susceptible than others. Carpenters and plumbers are likely to suffer hearing problems thanks to their work, as are metal and nonmetal miners, agricultural workers, construction workers, manufacturing and utility workers, transportation employees and military personnel.

Noise-induced hearing loss is 100% preventable

According to the CDC, noise-induced hearing loss is 100 percent preventable. This means that there is no reason you should suffer hearing problems because of your job. If loud noises are an issue at your job, your employer should have prevention measures in place to protect your hearing – everything from acoustic walls to ear protection.
