Croton-on-Hudson, New York is a town centered around the meeting of the Croton River and the Hudson River, and whose southern, eastern and western sides are bounded by the rivers. It is believed by archaelogists that the area was inhabited by Native Americans as far back as 4950 B.C. An peace treaty made between the native Kitchawanc tribe and Dutch settlers in 1645 is marked by a plaque imbedded on a rock in Croton Point Park. The name "Croton" of both the town and the river is derived from the chief of the Kitchawanc tribe, Kenoten, which is believed to mean "wild wind."
