Hastings-on-Hudson, New York is a hamlet of Greenburgh, New York that is located in the New York City suburb of Westchester County. Hastings-on-Hudson was originally a part of Philipsburg Manor, which was the estate of Dutch carpenter Frederick Philipse. The Philipses had been supporters of British king George III, so after the Revolutionary War, their estate was split up and sold to Americans. In the early days of the United States, the people of Hastings-on-Hudson worked mostly in stone quarries. Billie Burke, who played Glinda the Good Witch in the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, lived in Hastings-on-Hudson and bequeathed her land to the school district.
