The hamlet of Hawthorne, NY is located within the town of Mount Pleasant, NY in Westchester County. Originally called Hammond's Mills, the name was changed to Unionville after the Revolutionary War and finally to Hawthorne in the early 20th century. The hamlet was named Hawthorne after Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, or Mother Mary Alphonsa, a Catholic nun who founded Rosary Hill Home and the Dominican Order of Hawthorne and was also the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlett Letter. Rosary Hill Home is a home for individuals with incurable cancer that is now located in Thornwood, New York.
