How to Keep the Sun from Putting You Out of Work

Many of those individuals employed in a position that profits from the nice warm summers of the season are also putting themselves at great risk on the job. Heat and sun-related injuries dramatically increase during the summer months as many more workers need to face the elements to accomplish seasonal work tasks.

The sun and the heat of a summer day can be brutal to work in and a real danger to your system. It is essential that safety precautions be taken by management and employees prior to embarking on a workday in the hot, hot sun. Here are some of the most common things you need to do to be sure your workday in the sun will be safe:

Drink Lots of Fluids

To avoid dehydration it is essential for all workers to consistently have access to fluids, especially water during the work day. Workers need to drink even when they do not yet feel thirsty.

Take Short Breaks

Working in the heat for long periods of time can lead to heat exhaustion which can be a serious condition for some people. It is important for workers, especially those doing heavy manual labor in the heat, to take frequent water breaks and rest in the shade if possible to allow the body time to cool down.

Wear Sunscreen/Protective Clothing

It is essential for all workers to use sun block on exposed areas of their body including the top of the head to prevent serious sun burns and blistering. Working in the sun or even on a cloudy day can produce potentially severe skin conditions, including cancer.

If you have suffered injuries during the summer months that could have been prevented by employer's diligence to safety, it is important to have your case evaluated by a legal professional.
