Irvington, New York is part of the town of Greenburgh, New York in suburban Westchester County. The town was originally inhabited by the Wappinger tribe, until it was settled by the Dutch in the late 17th century. Along with the rest of Westchester County, Irvington prospered with the war-time trade of the American Revolution. In 1849, the Hudson River Railroad reached Irvington. A few years later in 1854, the name was changed by popular vote to "Irvington" to honor Washington Irving, author of Rip Van Winkle andThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
