How ‘Wounded Warriors’ can get expedited Social Security Disability help

It can be terribly disheartening to dedicate your life to serving your county, only to return home badly injured and unable to work. If you were seriously injured or disabled while on active duty, then the Social Security Administration has good news. The SSA will expedite the processing of disability claims from military service members disabled while on active military service.

Active military service members who become disabled on or after October 1, 2001 quality for expedited SSD claims processing, regardless of where their disability occurred. This is known at SSA as the Wounded Warriors program.

Expedited SSD claim facts for wounded warriors

  1. The definition of disability is different for Social Security than for the military. To qualify as disabled according to the Social Security definition, you must be unable to do substantial work because of your medical condition(s), and your medical condition(s) must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least one year or be expected to result in death.

  1. There are two kinds of Social Security disability benefit programs. The first, the Social Security disability insurance program (SSDI), pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are “insured” (being insured means that you worked long enough to qualify and you paid Social Security taxes). The second program is the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, which pays benefits based on financial need.

  1. You may be able to remain on active duty and receive military pay at the same time as you receive SSA disability benefits. While SSA rules to not permit you to engage in substantial work activity for pay or profit, maintaining your active duty status and paycheck won’t necessarily disqualify you from receiving benefits. SSA will evaluate your case to determine if the work activity you are engaging in while on active duty permits you to also receive SSA disability payments.

  1. Once you make a claim, it is sent to a state Disability Determination Services (DDS) office. State experts will contact the doctors and facilities that treated you to learn more about your medical records. You may be asked to have a certain exam or medical test to help the DDS expert decide on your case.

  1. To help SSA process your claim as quickly as possible, keep thorough records of your work history, all the doctors you have seen, and what treatments you have received. If you are asked to go to an appointment for a test or procedure, make sure you keep the appointment. Finally, if any of your information changes – your home address, the location of your hospital or doctor, etc – notify the SSA immediately. It is very important that you work with the DDS office so that your case can be successfully expedited.
