Pending Social Security Disability Cases Drops Below 700,000

Over the past few years, Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, has battled the problem of the rapidly increasing amount of pending disability cases. A bad economy, job lossess and an endless amount of disability claimants have all contributed to The Social Security Administration's enormous backlog of cases. But while the number of disability cases continue to grow, the Administration was proud to announce on March 2, 2010, that the number of pending disability cases stands at 697,437. This is the first time this number has dipped below 700,000 since 2005.

Social Security has also announced that the processing time for cases has dropped an impressive 72 days. That's an improvement of over 2 months! Social Security's recent hiring of more Administrative Law Judges as well as the opening of National Hearing Centers to assist in the overflow of some hearing offices have led to the decrease in pending cases.

This is great news for individuals with pending claims. More Judges means that hearing locations can handle more claims each month. More claims being heard each month means less wait time for a hearing. Click here to read the full press release from The Social Security Administration.
