Millions of Americans and certainly many New Yorkers enjoy watching football, but the bottom line is that football is a business. And like any business it has to make money to survive. Most fans enjoy the game and don’t think much about the dark side of America’s sport, but that dark side is there.
As football players age, they are more likely than other people their age to suffer from issues related to their chosen sport. How many fans or players know that football players are more likely to suffer from cognitive problems, early-onset Alzheimer’s, back problems, joint problems, and much, much more?
Not only do retired football players have to deal with debilitating injuries, but they are often uninsurable. The NFL does not want to deal with them anymore, they can’t find their own health insurance, and they then have to turn to the government for help. Sadly, some pro football players – most notably the late Johnny Unitas – are unable to get disability benefits despite their broken physical condition.
Being a football player is no different than holding a job in any other hard-working career. Tough jobs take a toll on a person’s mind and body, and after a worker – or football player – sustains injuries because of their job, they expect to be taken care of. However, just like construction workers, hotel workers, or any other hard working employee, football players may find themselves out of luck after an on-the-job injury or after years of backbreaking service.
Can you relate to this quote from NFL player Dave Pear? “…you think you are invincible but when you get hit in the head, you injure your brain and life becomes different. We want our disability, our pension and future medical benefits. We don't want charity.”
No matter how you were hurt – be it on the field, on a scaffold, in an office cubicle, or in a restaurant – you deserve to be treated with respect and fairness if the work you do causes you physical or mental damage. Don’t make the mistake that many football players have made over the years – don’t “be strong” or “suck it up”. In New York, injured workers deserve workers’ compensation after an on the job injury. If you are injured and need financial assistance, even if it is just help paying your medical bills, you should seek help.
