Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

If you unable to work and have little or no financial assets, you could be eligible for the federal SSI program. This program provides monthly income to people who have a limited income and other limited resources. If you qualify for SSI, you may also qualify for Medicaid and food stamps.

Health Insurance Through Medicare

If you are disabled or sick and cannot work, you are probably very worried about what you are going to do for health insurance. If your condition is very serious, you may be eligible for Medicare not long after your Social Security disability claim is approved. If you are approved for benefits, you become eligible for Medicare 24 months after the Administration rendered you disabled.

Once you qualify for Medicare, there may be additional benefits you can secure. If you have a very low income and few resources available to you, your home state may be willing to pay for your Medicare premiums and even some other out-of-pocket medical expenses. This can be a big help for individuals on a limited or fixed income.

Food Stamp Program

It may be worth your time to apply for food stamps if you are struggling to make ends meet, even if you just need temporary help. All you have to do is pick up an application at your Social Security office.
