A stroke can be a completely life-changing event for a New York worker. If you survive a stroke you are lucky, as it is the third leading cause of death in the U.S., however you can be left with serious limitations that affect your ability to work.

You may be completely unable to work at all, or you may have a temporary or permanent disability because of the stroke. Whatever the situation, if you are not able to work the way you used to or have in the past, Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) benefits may be the answer.

The Social Security Administration considers strokes to be a neurological impairment, and to be eligible for benefits you have to have experienced significant and persistent problems in motor function, sensory or motor aphasia, difficulty speaking or communicating, mental problems, or other significant motor weakness that prevents you from working.

Disability Determination for Stroke Victims

To quality for SSDI, you cannot be working, which the SSA defines as making over $1,000 a month. If you do a little work but make less than this amount, you won’t be disqualified on that alone.

To qualify for SSDI, you’ll have to show – through information from your doctor – that your disabilities from the stroke are significant enough to prevent you from working. Some stroke victims are unable to walk, sit, stand, or perform other physical activity, which can prevent them from working at their previous occupation.

You could also have suffered mental or other physical impairments from the stroke. If your ability to speak, hear or see is affected then you could be eligible for benefits. Or, if you suffered cognitive changes and cannot understand directions or mentally process what is going on around you that affect your ability to work, you could be eligible.
