The city of Peekskill, New York was first settled in the 17th century by Dutch settler John Peeck when he purchased the land from the Sanchoe Native Americans. Peeck's Kil, meaning "stream" in Dutch, became Peekskill and the city was officially incoporated in 1816. The town was the home of a stop on the Underground Railroad and was the landing place for the Peekskill Meteorite, which crashed into a parked car on October 9th, 1992.
