The village of Scarsdale, New York was one of nine royal estates in the state of New York during colonial times. Scarsdale Manor was established by Caleb Heathcote, the son of a British noble, in 1701 after he became a succesfull land owner since settling in the New York colony in 1666. The estate flourished and attracted more inhabitants, including James Fenimore Cooper, who wrote his novel The Spy while in Scarsdale. Scarsdale transitioned from rural to suburban after the Arthur Suburban Home Company bought 150 acres of land and developed a huge row of one-family houses on it. Notable residents include Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor and Yoko Ono and Markhoff & Mittman employee Stefanie Mittman.
