New York Workers and Head Injuries

There are many ways that New York workers can injure themselves on the job. One of the more serious injuries involves trauma to the head. A head trauma is any injury that causes damage to the brain, skill or scalp. It can range from a minor bump or scrape to a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Fortunately, we humans are designed with thick skulls that in general do a good job of protecting our heads. Because of this, most head injuries are minor – bumps, bruises, scrapes – and they heal fairly well on their own. However, if you are unlucky enough to suffer a more serious injury, you may end up being hospitalized.

Types of head injuries

In general there are two types of head injuries that New York workers can experience. The first is a closed head injury, meaning that the injury you suffer does not break or crack your skull. The second type is an open or penetrating head injury, where the skull is cracked or broken open. Penetrating injuries often happen if you fall from a great height or are involved in a car wreck.

An injury to your brain can result in a concussion, which is when your brain is shaken. This is different from another type of brain injury, a contusion, which is a bruise on your brain. The symptoms you experience with either a concussion or a contusion will depend on the location and extent of your injury.

Treatment for a brain injury

The treatment you’ll receive for a brain injury after a workplace accident in New York will depend on the type and severity of your injury:

  • Minor injuries are usually treated at home, with over the counter painkillers, bed rest, or ice.
  • Cuts to your head may require stitching, stapling, or glue to repair the wound.
  • If you sustain a serious closed head injury you may be required to stay in the hospital for observation, since it can be difficult to determine the extent of the damage with this type of injury.
  • If the pressure in your skull increases because of a serious closed head injury, you may need surgery to relieve the pressure.
  • If your head injury leaves you at risk of seizure, you may need anti-seizure medication.
  • If you are at risk of infection because of a penetrating head injury, you may need to take antibiotics.
  • Penetrating head injuries may require surgery if a foreign object needs to be removed or repairs made to your head.
