What Can I Expect From a Visit to the Endocrinologist

After regular visits with your medical care provider, you may be referred to an endocrinologist if your doctor suspects you have health issues concerning your glands. An endocrinologist is a specially train doctor that treats the glands in the body. The glands control your hormones which are responsible for the functionality of your growth, metabolism, development, and reproduction.

If you have been referred to an endocrinologist for further evaluation, you will need to bring your family doctor’s referral along with any medical records you have which relate to the visit. You can also create a list of any symptoms and questions you have. Bring a list of all medications you are presently taking as well as the dosages of each prescription. Over the counter medication should also be noted.

When you get to the appointment, the medical staff will conduct a health history and a physical. They will ask you questions related to the current or past symptoms you have that may be related to a glandular problem. Be sure to tell all of the details, no matter how small, as all information can be important in a diagnosis.

You may need to have blood work completed to determine hormone levels in your body. Once the results are complete, your specialist will be able to tell you some more details about your diagnosis, follow up treatments, and subsequent schedule of visits.
