The New York State Department of Financial Services have arrested 18 people in thirteen different New York counties that have been accused of workers compensation fraud.
After a joint investigation by the department and other agencies, 18 people were arrested on various fraud charges involving workers compensation benefits. All of the people arrested are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
Some of the arrest allegations include:
A 48 year old man collected $22,800 in benefits after injuring his leg while cutting down trees. He was found to be collecting benefits for the injury while also managing a storage facility and operating a scrap metal business.
A 44 year old woman collected $26,000 in benefits from a knee injury on the job. She was discovered to have provided false information about her wages and employment status to receive more benefits.
A 51 year old man was accused of trying to collect benefits after he claimed he was hurt at work while employed with a tool-making company after slipping on ice on the company’s property. Witness disputed his claim and he never received benefits from compensation but is charged with fraud.
A 60 year old women collected benefits from workers compensation after breaking her ankle working as teacher’s aide. Investigators discovered her ankle injury actually occurred at home but she still collected $12,900 in benefits.
A 63 year old man collected $25,500 in benefits after he claimed to be out of work due to an injury. Investigations revealed he had been working at the same time he was collecting benefits.
