20 New York firefighters injured, one woman killed in six story blaze

Posted on Feb 28, 2011

A fire fueled by high winds that ripped through a six-story apartment building in New York City has left twenty firefighters injured, and one woman in the building dead.

The fire happened in a building on East 29th Street in Flatbush, Brooklyn.  According to the NY Fire Department it was started by candles arranged around a bed for a voodoo ceremony.  A man and a woman were involved in the ceremony.

The candles caught bedding and clothing on fire, which the man tried to put out with water from the bathroom sink.  Fire investigators claim this wasted at least 3 minutes of precious time, and allowed the fire to gain strength before 911 was called.

Another civilian error was made that worsened the flames.  A man in an adjacent room opened a window and propped open a door when he was bothered by the billowing smoke.  The open window and door allowed high winds outside to blow through the apartment, creating a blowtorch effect that spread the fire throughout the building.

Making the situation worse, firefighters were delayed in arriving at the scene because they were tending to a police officer who had accidentally shot himself in the leg.  The fire turned into a five-alarm fire that resulted in over 200 firefighters being called to the scene.

A woman living two floors above the apartment where the fire broke out was killed, and about 20 firefighters were injured.
