Just as millions of workers are concerned about the Social Security crisis in terms of the potential loss of future retirement benefits, the same can be said about disability benefits in the future. According to a recent report appearing in OnlineJournal.com, the future looks bleak for individuals currently receiving Social Security disability benefits as well as those who may need these benefits in the future.
The problem much like that of the nation's retirement benefits comes back to more money coming out of the disability trust than money coming in from working taxpayers. If this pace continues with no changes in the coming years, the Social Security Disability Trust could go "bust" by the year 2018. This would leave millions of recipients out of luck when it comes to compensation received by the government as supplemental income. Unfortunately for many disability benefit recipients, this is the only income coming into the household. The loss of this main source of money would be financially devastating to these individuals and in some cases the families they support.
To prevent this from happening, many are pushing for programs which would allow individuals with moderate disabilities to transition back into work. The current economy as well as lack of available jobs is creating a hardship for many individuals who could work, but find it difficult if not impossible to find the type of job which they can perform with limited abilities. In order to save the disability trust and the people who rely so heavily on it, there must be a way to help people who are willing and able to work to find employment opportunities which enable them to earn their own money and not rely on the system.
