$5M federal grant to help disabled youth and adults in New York

Posted on Sep 30, 2010

People receiving help from the Social Security Disability program may want to go back to work even with the challenges that they face from health issues or their physical limitations, but it can be difficult to find the appropriate kind of work.

A new federal grant for New Yorkers hopes to change that.  The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded nearly $5 million to the New York State Department of Labor.  The award is intended to help young people and adults who are unemployed or who are receiving Social Security Disability benefits.

What is the NY Dept. of Labor going to do with all this money?  They plan to put programs in place to improve the education, training, and employment opportunities for these individuals.  The hope is that with help, unemployed people or those receiving disability benefits will be able to find new, meaningful jobs so they can rebuild their lives and the U.S. economy.

How will the people who need this program find out about it?  The SSA’s Work Incentive Planning and Assistance Program and its Community Work Incentive Coordinators have the responsibility to reach out to the individuals in the community who may benefit from these new programs.

The $5 million being given to the state of New York is part of $21 million that was awarded to a total of nine states under the Labor Department's Disability Employment Initiative.
