An 85 year old Bronxville, New York resident lost his life on Saturday while attempting to cross Pondfield Road. A taxi driver hit Alfred Copeland while driving his cab on the vicinity. Investigators believe the glare of the sun may have been a contributing factor to the accident which occurred around 8:30 in the morning.
After Copeland was hit, he was transported to Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle. Authorities on the scene said that initially Copeland did not appear to have suffered life-threatening injuries. He was conscious and speaking the day after the accident. However, Copeland later died from his injuries while recovering in the hospital.
There have been no charges filed against the taxi driver, William O'Hara. The Westchester County District Attorney's office has the case and is reviewing the evidence. O'Hara, age 68, was driving east on Pondfield Road near Garden Avenue when the accident occurred. The vehicle was a 2006 Crown Victoria registered to Cross County Taxi and the driver was licensed to provide taxi services in the village.
