9/11 Crane Collapse At Washington DC’s National Cathedral

Posted on Sep 28, 2011

Just hours before the National Cathedral memorial celebration of the 10th anniversary of September 11th, a tragedy occurred when a crane collapsed on the cathedral's construction site.

Construction workers who were repairing the damage at Washington's National Cathedral were using the crane to fix the structural issues caused by the recent 5.9 magnitude east coast earthquake which occurred August 23, 2011. At the time of the collapse, the crane operator was working to lower the boom resulting in the crane toppling over. At the time, there were reported wind gusts of up to 50 mph in the area of the construction site which may have contributed to the accident.

According to reports, the only injury sustained on the construction site during the collapse was the crane operator. He was in the cab of the crane at the time of the incident. The operator was subsequently taken to a local hospital and was released later that same day. There was no damage reported to the cathedral itself but reports indicated the cathedral's gift shop as well as several vehicles parked in the vicinity were damaged during the crane collapse. Two other workers were reported injured the next day as they tried to disassemble the crane.

The National Cathedral was to have hosted two major events commemorating the attacks on the NY World Trade Centers. However, due to the construction site incident, both events had to be moved to other locations. OSHA teams are investigating the crane accident. The company that operates the crane had been cited in 2006 for not providing protective equipment for workers. Another citation was issued to the company in 2007 when a worker was engaged in job duties within swing radius of a crane in operation mode.
