9/11 Firefighters At Increased Risk for Cancer

Posted on Sep 05, 2011

There has been a new study conducted concerning the firefighters who were involved in rescue efforts at the World Trade Centers on September 11, 2001. The study, which was published in the British medical journal The Lancet, showed that those firefighters who were present during the rescue operations are 19% more likely to get cancer than individuals that were not present after the terrorist attacks in New York City.

This new study's results are evidence that supports the link between workers at ground zero and cancer. There were 10,000 NYC firefighters included in the recent tests and the results are the strongest evidence to prove the existing link. Firefighters working around the twin towers were exposed to smoke and hazardous dust after the collapse of the buildings.

The chief medical officer for the New York Fire Department, Dr. David J. Prezant, lead the study. The findings of the study show there is an increased likelihood that those firefighters who were present would develop any type of cancer. However, Prezant also stated that the results do not indicate an epidemic.

The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act does not list cancer on its compensation coverage. The $4.3 billion set aside to treat and monitor illnesses and other health issues related to the World Trade Center attacks lists several health issues like asthma and respiratory diseases but cancer is not currently listed. There is law that requires the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to conduct ongoing reviews to decipher which related illnesses need to be added to the compensation list.

Out of the 10,000 firefighters involved in the study, 8,927 of them were considered to have been exposed at least to one day at Ground Zero, Out of the exposed individuals, there were 263 cases of cancer identified. The rate of cancer among the exposed group was also listed at 10% higher than that of overall American men.
