9/11 Workers: One Year Left to Register for Workers’ Comp

Posted on Sep 28, 2009

Workers and volunteers who performed any rescue, recover or cleanup on 9/11 may be eligible for workers’ comp benefits through the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board.  Legislation enacted in 2006 allows these workers to register with the Board to receive benefits if they are currently sick or if they might get sick down the road.

Right now one year remains for 9/11 workers to register with the board so they can file for medical and wage replacement benefits.  The final registration deadline is September 11, 2010.  According to the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) about 39,000 people have registered with the board so far.

The new deadline is the result of a recent extension passed by the NY State Legislature in June 2008.  The original deadline was set at August 14, 2007 but has been extended several times.  Any worker – even those who reside outside of New York – who fears they may have suffered as a result of their efforts on 9/11 should register as soon as possible.
