A Guide to Depression Medications

Posted on Mar 23, 2010

Depressed?  You're  not alone.  About one in every six adults experiences depression at some point in their life. The most common treatments are antidepressant drugs, counseling or a combination of the two.  Because there are so many different antidepressant drugs on the market today, you'll want to understand the benefits and side effects before taking any medication.  And, what works for one person might not work the best for the other.  Studies indicate that 4 out of every 10 people on antidepressants report that they needed to try different drugs before getting the best results.

Finding the right antidepressant for you can be confusing and frustrating. This is something you'll want to do with your doctor.  In order to help you, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) developed a guide on antidepressants for adults with depression.   In addition to discussing the different drugs used to treat depression, the guide also gives practical information on depression.

Depression can often be so debilitating, you might not want to get out of bed and go about your day.  Depending on your situation you might or might not be eligible for workers' compensation benefits.  Discuss this with your doctor as you work towards maintaining a better quality of life.
