The New York Times has been following an investigative series on the abuse and neglect going in New York state-run homes for the last year. With each investigative report, new and disturbing evidence finds that workers are not only still abusing their disabled charges but they are still getting away with it time and time again.
Disabled individuals have faced abuse, neglect, and improper care for decades and the continued investigation shows the powers that be aren't following proper protocol to end the terrible treatment of those unable to fend for themselves.
Most shocking of all events is the discovery that when employees supposedly caring for the disabled have been found to have inflicted abuse, they are rarely terminated for their unacceptable behavior. Most are moved on to other care homes where the abuse continues to occur, with no consequences, legal or otherwise.
There is also proof that a staggering amount of abusive actions go unreported to law enforcement as co-workers cover up for each others actions. While not all workers who care for the disabled have remained silent, many continued cases of abuse do keep happening because of worker silence.
Abuse in any form should not be tolerated, yet within the system of care for the developmentally disabled, it continues despite the death and injuries of many that were supposed to be cared for. New York no longer operates its warehouse-like facilities for the mentally impaired. The state has moved to rely on group homes on a smaller scale. However, the group homes are often left unsupervised and without consequences leading the unnecessary neglect and continued abuse of New York's disabled population.
