After 14 years, New York Workers’ Comp Doctors to be paid more

Posted on Sep 29, 2010

The New York Workers’ Compensation Board recently announced that doctors in NY who take care of injured workers will be paid more.  This is the first increase in compensation for doctors who care for injured NY workers in 14 years.

The move was mandated by legislation passed in 2007 and is needed, contend advocates, because doctors need incentive to accept workers’ comp cases.  Given the low reimbursement rates and intense amount of paperwork required in a comp case, many doctors have chosen to not accept them.

The pay increase is 30 percent.  It will apply only to evaluation and management services in doctors’ offices, emergency rooms, and hospitals.  Fees for radiology or surgery will remain the same.

Officials hope that by offering more money to doctors for treating NY workers’ comp patients more doctors will actually be willing to take comp cases.  They also hope that this will lead to faster, better care for injured workers.

Another move that should help workers get faster, better care is included in new medical treatment guidelines that take effect December 1.  This change will allow doctors to treat patients for common injuries with treatments that previously required insurance authorization.  Under the new guidelines, they won’t need prior authorization.
