A second Bronx business owner has been charged with underpaying his employees and failing to secure workers’ compensation insurance. The New York State Attorney General has accused gas station owner Alex Moreno, 35, is accused of withholding over $225,000 from his workers and defrauding the state unemployment system.
Moreno owns two Getty gas stations in New York. According to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Moreno paid his workers as little as $4 an hour for 12 hour days. In addition, Cuomo claimed that Moreno failed to purchase workers’ comp insurance for his employees. Failure to do so is a felony in New York.
Moreno was arraigned last Thursday; his lawyer says that he denies the charges against him. He is facing 41 felony and 28 misdemeanor counts. If found guilty of the charges, Moreno could face a $5,000 fine and up to four years in prison. His bail was set at $100,000 bond or $25,000 cash.
