Bronx Worker Injured in Garage Roof Collapse, Rescued by FDNY

A New York City sanitation worker was injured at a Bronx worksite when a concrete roof caved in on the morning of March 10, 2011. The incident took place shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Cromwell Avenue in Mount Eden at a city garage belonging to the Sanitation Department. A 10-by-30-foot section of concrete garage roof fell on the worker, who was then trapped underneath the rubble. The FDNY was called to the scene, and the worker was eventually freed through the rescue efforts of firefighters.

"He was just doing his job," Sanitation Department spokesman Keith Mellis said, "and this unfortunate thing happened to him." Once freed, the worker was immediately transported to Lincoln Medical Center in South Bronx. The worker's name has not yet been released, but he is confirmed to be a garage service worker with the city. A New York City firefighter was also injured while trying to free the trapped worker.

While the extent of the injuries was unknown at the time of publication, neither the injured worker nor the firefighter was thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries. The roof collapse is currently under investigation by both the NYPD and the Buildings Department.
