Brooklyn Workplace Death: NYPD Cop Killed While responding to Domestic Dispute

Posted on Mar 13, 2011

A NYPD officer was killed in an on-the-job accident when he was pushed off the front stoop of a Brooklyn brownstone while trying attempting to handcuff a suspect in a domestic dispute.

The workplace tragedy occurred slightly before 5 a.m. on Sunday, March 13.  Police Officer Alain Schaberger and two other cops responded to a domestic violence incidence in Boerum Hill.  Ex-con George Villaneuva had threated to kill his girlfriend earlier that morning.  The cops were attempting to handcuff Villaneuva when the suspect shoved Officer Schaberger.

The 42-year-old veteran police officer fell over the railing and tumbled 9 feet to the sidewalk.  He fractured his neck and was rushed to Lutheran Hospital.  He died at the hospital.

Charges are pending against Villaneuva. The suspect had 28 prior arrests, mostly for robbery and burglary.  He was involved in 12 prior domestic violence accidents.

Officer Schaberger was a U.S. Navy veteran and a well-liked member of NYPD.  The New York workplace injury attorneys at Markhoff & Mittman would like to offer our condolences to the family of Officer Schaberger.
