Compassionate allowances for schizophrenia

Posted on Jan 27, 2010

Compassionate allowances are a way for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to quickly provide benefits to applicants who have medical conditions that are so severe that there is no question that they meet disability standards.

The SSA maintains a list of conditions and diseases that are qualify for a compassionate allowance, and they periodically add to and update this list as necessary.

The administration has been considering whether or not to add schizophrenia in young people to the list of disorders covered by the Compassionate Allowance program.  The SSA has teamed up with the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institutes of Health to hold hearings on this matter.

Under discussion is how SSA can use their compassionate allowance program to identify young adults with schizophrenia and provide them with benefits to keep them from being adversely affected by homelessness and unemployment.  Schizophrenia affects over two million Americans, mostly people in their teens and twenties.

To date SSA has been able to fast-track about 150,000 cases under the Compassionate Allowance and Quick Disability Determination processes.  These processes can be a life-saver for Americans affected by extremely serious medical conditions and diseases that leave them unable to work or support themselves independently.
