Racing at the Aqueduct was canceled last week, following an accident which involved a construction worker cutting through a cable while working on a project at the casino. As reported in the New York Daily News online edition, "NYRA officials remained optimistic that racing would resume Friday."
The accident triggered power outages which in turn forced NYRA Rewards and the Belmont Cafe to close. The stake schedules for Belmont and Saratoga meets had just been released by the NYRA prior to the accident. The information released provided specific details as to the the official opening for the spring/summer meetings as well as the final meet at the end of the season. Included in the announcement made by the NYRA were the dates and details regarding highlighted events such as the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes. The track was unable to take wagers due to the lack of power which disrupted the phone and Internet betting system.
This incident is a perfect example of how a simple construction accident can have far-reaching and disruptive consequences. Whether it is a cut cable at a racetrack or a downed power line in a city, construction accidents can cause problems for households and businesses in the surrounding areas. For this reason, the prevention of accidents on construction sites should be a priority for employers and employees. Proper training used in conjunction with safety procedures can prevent these types of accidents. By reducing accidents on the job site, construction workers will not only avoid problems with affected businesses but also reduce the number of injuries sustained by employees on the job.
