Posted on Oct 17, 2011

A man fell six stories through the ceiling from the top of a church building in the upper west side of Manhattan last week. The victim's name was not released but he was said to be a 33 year old construction worker who was on the site of the Church of St. Paul the Apostle located on West 60th Street.

Investigators believe the worker may have been electrocuted which working on a ladder. The man lost his footing and fell roughly 125 feet where he landed in the main aisle of the church. At the time of the accident, the man and a co-worker were setting up rigging systems for safety.

The pastor of the Church of St. Paul heard about the accident and came to the church to perform last rites on the victim. Mid-day mass had to be canceled on Thursday as investigators continued to look into the cause of this latest construction accident. It was noted that the site had been experiencing several electrical issues throughout the project.

The victim has been working on a restoration project for the church. At the time of the accident, the famous Rockettes dance team was in the basement practicing routines. Those on site reported hearing a ‘big bang' which startled those in the basement. The church is used as a rehearsal space for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. No other injuries on the job site were reported. Investigation continues.
